Lay Readers
The role of the Lay Reader - or lector, is to instill the Word of God into the hearts of the congregation. At St Augustine's we emphasise the importance of this role and encourage the reader to develop a spiritual perspective in his/her reading.
We encourage parishioners of all ages to come forward if they would like to participate in the liturgy in this way. Please speak to Maggie - she would love to hear from you.
In a recent catechesis on the Mass, Pope Francis spoke of the importance of having good readers:
When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people, he told pilgrims on 31st January 2018. “We must look for good readers!” he said “not those who mutter and nothing is understood. They must be prepared and rehearse before the Mass in order to read well. And this creates a climate of receptive silence.”1
